What’s behind our best-selling South African beauty brand?
African Extracts Rooibos skin care is inspired by the unique antioxidant benefits of the Rooibos plant that grows naturally only in the Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape.
Like champagne, the Rooibos plant (aspalathus linearis) has its own protected geographic status and is known all over the world as a health tea.
“Our hero ingredient is an organic green Rooibos extract, because it offers powerful antioxidant protection and soothing properties,” says Sarah Hetherington, an award-winning former beauty editor who is a co-founder of the brand with her husband, Cape Town-based skin-care manufacturer Rob Tiffin.
“After trying so many products, my favourites were those with plant extracts. In developing our Rooibos skin care we have selected specific plant extracts and vitamins for their proven benefits. Your daily routine may be quick and easy, but advanced skin science stands behind each product. Being cruelty free, and having ingredients that plant based and sustainably sourced is also important.
“Perhaps my biggest discovery was that good quality, effective skin care that delivers on its promise doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
“African Extracts is a household name in South Africa, selling more than 250 000 products a month. We’re so excited that Rooibos benefits are being recognised more – and that’s why we have launched our effective, affordable skin-care products here.
“I hope you enjoy using our products. In a recent survey, 100% of UK customers said they repurchased because they liked the results for their skins. I think you will too.”

Celebrating our resilience
Who doesn’t love the catchy rhythms of MasterKG and Nomcebo Zikode’s global megahit Jerusalema or found yourself dancing in your home? The upbeat tune provided the African Extracts team with a great opportunity to come together and have some fun. We share our spirit of resilience, while celebrating the enduring gift from nature that’s the Rooibos plant. It’s our very own natural heritage – shared with the world.
